LocationBrisbane is the capital city of Queensland. The main river in this city is the Brisbane river, which runs for 344km through Brisbane city and empties out into Moreton Bay. In January 2011 Australia encountered its 2nd highest flood since the beginning of the 20th century. The most major flooding occurred throughout most of the Brisbane River catchment, most severely in the catchments of the Lockyer Creek and Bremer River where many record flood heights took place. The flooding took 23 lives in the Lockyer Valley and one in Brisbane, and an estimated 18,000 properties were immersed.

2010In December 2010 one of the most devastating floods in Australian history hit Brisbane. Thirty five people were killed and over two hundred thousand were affected by this flood with damage costs reaching around 2.38 billion AUS dollars. Bad weather in the prior months caused several destructive floods. Heavy rainfall had begun in September 2010 and the final blow was a cyclone on Christmas Eve. Areas along the banks of the Burnett River and the Fitzroy River were affected the most forcing many people out of their homes especially in Theodore. The flooding continued there for another two weeks after an evacuation occurred. The Burnett River was hit on the 28th and 29th December, when the river levels rose to over eighteen meters.

2011The flooding continued into 2011 with the Brisbane River, Toowoomba and Lockyer River areas being flooded most severely as their banks broke. A further twenty thousand homes were affected by the waters, as well as local sights and monuments. One of the bridges suspended over the river, The Brisbane River Walk, collapsed into pieces. Towns were completely cut off for days and caused total damage to surrounding areas of these traumatic floods.
